Ford recalls Fusion, Lincoln MKZ for seatbelt, seat back problems

Publish date: 2024-04-22

Ford has issued two recalls affecting nearly 681,000 late-model Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ sedans. The majority of those vehicles may have problems that affect their seatbelts, while a small number could have issues with their seat backs. Both problems increase the risk of injury to occupants during collisions.

Recall No. 1: 2013-16 Ford Fusion, 2013-15 Lincoln MKZ
Units affected: 602,739 registered in the U.S., 35,614 in Canada, 8,665 in Mexico, and 653 elsewhere

On these vehicles, Ford says that the heat generated during deployment of the seatbelt anchor pretensioners might cause the pretensioner cables to separate. If that were to happen, the seat belts wouldn't properly restrain occupants, which would boost the risk of injury. Ford has received reports of two accidents and two injuries linked to the problem.

The recall affects the following models and dates of manufacture.

Ford will mail recall notices to owners of those vehicles, asking them to make service appointments at their local dealerships. Dealers will apply a coating to the front driver and passenger seatbelt anchor pretensioners, which should protect the cables from higher temperatures experienced during deployment. The repair will be made at no charge to owners.

If you own one of these vehicles and have further questions, you're asked to call Ford Customer Service at 800-392-3673 and inquire about recall #16S42.

Recall No. 2: 2017 Ford Fusion
Units affected: 25 registered in the U.S., 2 in Canada

This much smaller recall stems from a problem with one of the Fusion's rear seats. According to Ford, the welds on the pivot pins that hold the sedan's left-rear seat in position may not comply with the automaker's specifications, and as a result, the seat may not restrain cargo during a crash. Thankfully, Ford has received no reports of accidents or injuries related to the problem.

The recall affects 2017 Ford Fusion vehicles built at Ford's Hermosillo Assembly Plant between September 27, 2016 and September 28, 2016. Ford will replace the second-row left-rear seat back frame at no charge.

If you believe that you own one of these vehicles, you're encouraged to call Ford Customer Service at 800-392-3673 and ask about recall #16S43.
