Mentored Youth Trout Day draws families to the water
Saturday was Mentored Youth Trout Day across Pennsylvania, giving kids and a mentor an opportunity to fish a week before trout season begins on April 6.
Some parents that took their children fishing Saturday said it was an opportunity to bring something that was a bright spot of their childhood to their own kids.
"Trying to build some of those memories that we did when we were younger," Nathan Kozen said by Lake Rowena with his daughter, Lilly. "She hears the stories about how we used to fish when we grew up all the time but get to experience it now."
The families said it was great to take advantage of the opportunity to fish before much of the public.
"Get out here, try to catch some fish. Get a little bit of a head start," Josh Hershberger with his daughters Sadie and Avery said. "We got a couple today."
Some children were more experienced, but for others, like Lilly Kozen, it was their first time fishing. She said the day quickly left an impression.
"I think that fishing is really fun, but the most thing I really like about it is you get to spend time with family, friends. You can enjoy it," Lilly Kozen said.
A list of the trout waters across the state can be found on the PA Fish and Boat Commission website.
