'Moana 2' trailer reveals plot details, return of 'The Rock'

UNDATED (WKRC) - Walt Disney Animation Studios premiered the first trailer for "Moana 2", the sequel to 2016's animated musical blockbuster.

"Three years since her first voyage, Moana is on an expansive journey in search of people beyond the shores of Motunui," reads a press release released on the Walt Disney Company's website. "Joined by Maui and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she's ever faced."

Maui was voiced by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in the 2016 film, and the new trailer shows the ex-WWE actor will return to reprise the role. Additionally, Auli'i Cravalho will return as the titular Moana.

Lin Manuel Miranda, of Broadway "Hamilton" fame, wrote the music for the first film, but is not involved with the sequel. The movie will still be a musical like its predecessor, and some of the new music is teased in the trailer. The new soundtrack is by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear (creators of the "Unofficial Bridgerton Musical"), Opetaia Foa'i, and Mark Mancina.

The sequel was announced alongside a live action film based on the original "Moana", with a different lead actress playing the namesake princess.

The sequel was announced in February, with Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger saying, "We can't wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when 'Moana 2' comes to theatres this November."

It's no surprise that Disney is quick to push any and everything "Moana", since the first movie was the most streamed film in 2023, according to Nielsen.

The new trailer clarified that the film will release in theaters on November 27.
