Training accident shooting death of Ohio corrections officer ruled a homicide: autopsy
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — There are new developments in the investigation into the accidental shooting death of an Ohio corrections officer.
After weeks of waiting, WSYX received a copy of the autopsy report for Lt. Rodney Osborne. He was shot and killed on April 9 during a training accident at the corrections facility in Orient.
The report breaks down several important points:
- Osborne took a bullet to the chest, causing serious injuries to his ribs and right lung.
- He was wearing a bulletproof vest at the time, but the the bullet hit him just above the vest line. The bullet that killed him was found in the back of the vest.
- The coroner’s office has ruled his manner of death as a homicide.
Just weeks ago, WSYX spoke with Osborne's sister, Candus Mitchell. She and her family are devastated by the loss.

A state employee is also under investigation for reckless homicide in the case.
WSYX also learned the incident happened during a "demonstration portion" of training at the gun range.
WSYX reached out to the Ohio Highway Patrol and the state Department of Corrections to get the latest details on the investigation, including any details on potential charges.
Since it is an active investigation, the Highway Patrol indicated updates will come with the completion of the investigation.
